The World of Insurance with Michelle Moore

This article was originally published in Illuminessence e-magazine, June 15, 2013.

Honesty, integrity and professionalism. These are the three qualities that Michelle Moore strives to embody.

Specializing in commercial/business insurance, Moore has been working in the insurance industry for over 13 years. Currently based in Hamilton, she works at Cowan Insurance Group as a Commercial Lines Account Manager. Cowan was recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies in 2012. In her role, Moore provides business owners professional advice, policy reviews and recommendations to ensure their business is properly insured.

Small to midsized business owners can turn to Moore for insurance advice; she helps them navigate the world of insurance, ranging from Commercial General Liability, Directors & Officers, Professional Liability, Student Housing Rental Insurance to Salon/Hairdressers/Beautician Insurance. For business owners, the process of getting the right kind of insurance is a long one. Moore consults with them from the very beginning, taking initial calls to place insurance coverage with reputable carriers and serving as the primary contact for her clients. It is also part of Moore’s job to keep abreast of policy changes and inform her clients accordingly.

In her own words….

Visibility in leadership

Women in leadership roles within the Insurance field are very visible, I believe, from a woman of color holding the President title at the IBAO (The Ontario Broker Association of Ontario) to the President of Cowan Insurance, Heather McLachlin – I believe that women play an important role in the insurance industry. I strongly feel that there is great opportunity for a person to grow within the insurance field whether male or female.

On young professionals

I recently got involved with a young professional group called “YEP” (Young Executive Professionals). This group is a great avenue that connects young professionals in the Hamilton area. It supports the growth of young professionals, both men and women, through networking and participating in community events. By allowing the next generation of professionals to voice their opinions and by valuing their feedback on several different community issues, we, as a whole can improve the Hamilton area. This group will only strengthen the Hamilton community. As a young professional, I would say that the insurance industry is like any other industry: if a person carries themselves with respect, obtain the proper education that relates to the field and produce quality work, I believe the sky is the limit for any female.

On balance

It is simply about prioritizing. Family comes first, but having the ability to grow in my career is very important to me as well. Professionally, I try my best to surpass any goal that is set for me in my role as an Commercial Insurance Account Manager. I also try to get involved with anything creative, whether it is attending a concert, or helping an organization with musicians, in order for their event to have a soulful/unique atmosphere. I enjoy quality music and love to connect the right musicians to the right project.

Philosophy in life

The philosophy which has guided me in my work and life is the golden rule

“Treat people how you would want to be treated”
